Silkie da Shocker

So about a week ago I went to see Silkie (Deep Medi) and XI in Toronto at The Basement. I hadn't been in Toronto for dubstep show in about 4 years prior to that, so to be out in The Great White North for the night was extra special ;)

Before Skydiver, Stuntman, and I got across the border we were instant suspects according to the Canadian Border Patrol. It was one thing for them to get suspicious about our intentions for going to Toronto and having us pull to the side, but to raid the car and search our CELL PHONES for god knows what, was a bit over the top. (I have a motorola razr for crying out loud!)

Meanwhile, on cloud 9, I tried to keep my composure as I was starting to come up on the scrumptious 'baked good' I'd consumed less than a half hour before. Nervous and cold we waited only a few minutes before they told us to 'have a nice day,' where we went merrily about our way.

When we got to The Basement we were greeted eagerly by the doorwomen who questioned if our troupe had come from Buffalo after checking our IDs, where we responded nonchalantly, 'yes.' The room was pretty dark with the only light being from behind the decks and the dancing green lasers mounted to the ceiling. Behind the decks stood a man about 5'6 with sporting a salt and peppered 50-esque doobie, it was XI.

XI crushed the dance with subbalicious rollers and dubplates from his own collection (according to the information I gathered from a rather satisfied Stunt). I was too amped after seeing XI and I knew Silkie was gonna mash it down so I put my all in once he stepped to the decks.

The bass was SO low that I could feel my jeans rattling against the hairs on my legs, (needless to say I had goodbumps during a few tunes), I was really impressed by what 40hz had put together. A couple rewinds, announcements for the next show, and a missing ID later, my left ear was killing me and my brownie buzz had wore off. The night was a success and I rested easy knowing that good dubstep still exists, only to wake up 10 the next morning for work :(

And that was last weekend.
(here's XI's guest mix on Mary Anne Hobbs Show BBC-Radio1.)
